A note from the nationals crew

Hey Everyone!

Madison is an amazing city and yesterday's roadrace was brutal but fun. If you can believe it, we all agreed it was worse than black mo! Just finishing the race was an amazing accomplishment.

Kelly got 10th, Sinead 17th, and Bekah 29th. D1 girls started 5-10 min before us, and we all passed quite a few of them. Jeff had a good race finishing 31 of 90, a third of his field didn't even finish the race because the course and pace were so brutal.  Tristan Baldwin of UVM lead a solo breakaway in Men's D1 about 1 min off the field for 3 laps then pulled out of the race. A kid from Furman who apparently rides for Bissel won the men's D2 road race. MIT went 1-3 in the women's D2 race. Anna McCloon captured 1st for the women's D1 race. Overall ECCC rocked the road race.

We all enjoyed sleeping in this morning, but after seeing that we were ranked 5th after day 1, we all were a lil sad we didn't give the TTT a go. We had never thought we would have done this well and so few girls teams would opt to do the TT!!

Thanks for all the support guys!! We will keep you updated!

Yale Race Weekend (April 9-10)

Three Bucknell riders and Papa K trekked up to Connecticut for the grueling Yale Lux et Velocitas race weekend April 9-10.

Saturday began early with the East Rock ITT: 500ft of climbing over 4 miles with grades over 15% that ends at the summit right next to the Soldiers and Sailors Monument. While other riders were intimidated by the supposed daunting climb, the hills of central PA made this climb look like child's play for our riders. As a result, Jeff took 6th place for Men's A and Kelly took 3rd for Women's A.
The afternoon brought both good weather and great racing. The circuit course went up the same hill as the morning ITT but also went down the curving, winding side, giving the race a challenging and technical aspect. Sporting the famous Series Leader Yellow Jersey for the first time, Jeff raced a tough 2 hrs and placed 18th. Kelly finished 3rd.
After such a long day, Harry and Papa K needed a break from all of the excitement, seeking refuge in the removable van seats.
Sunday was the 'Round the College Criterium--a notably fast course for all Divisions. Harry had an exciting race and finished 10th in Men's B. Kelly finished 5th overall (3rd in A) and Jeff placed 14th.
It was all-around good racing for this weekend. Despite the small traveling squad, it was still a strong showing. We look forward to a strong finish to the season at Penn State next weekend for the ECCC Championship (April 23-24)!

Grant's Tomb Criterium (March 12-13)

There's seems to be a significant lack of race recaps! So I'll try to catch everyone back up on a couple of the past races. (Hopefully those who attended the races I missed will so kind to post a quick recap......)

Following the Rutgers Scarlet Scurry, the team started off spring break by traveling to NYC for the Grant's Tomb Criterium. Even though it rained constantly the week leading up to the race, and the Stevens Duck Country road race through Delaware Water Gap was canceled on Sunday due to flooding, the weather Saturday was perfect for racing.

We had a great turn out, and enjoyed the cheering support of several Bucknell alumni. The races started off with Men's D2. After coming un-clipped in the final spring, Tugboat pulled out a second place finish.

Billy Jean raced well in his first ever collegiate race, and Gil also had an impressive top 10 finish.

The Men's C race was just as exciting, with Tino crashing inside 6 laps to go. Unable to get a free lap from the pit, 2Step smacked his handlebars back in place while Tino jumped on the bike, was shoved back into the race, and finished in 6th place.

It was also Steph's first race in the ECCC, and she finished strong in the Women's Intro race. Harry Chen competed in Men's B, and finished well after taking time off for a knee injury.

There was a strong showing in the Women A/B race with Kelly, Sinead, Bekah, and Emily working together. Kelly sprinted into 2nd place, while Sinead, Emily, and Bekah followed in 6th, 7th, and 8th.

Jeff had a great race in Men's A, working with a break away group of 3 other riders from the start of the race. With less than 3 laps to go the break was caught, but Jeff still managed to grab 6th place in the field sprint!

Although disappointed in the cancellation of the road race, the team was ready for a nice week of relaxation at home before returning to race the Philly Phlyer.

Rutgers Opener

Bucknell Cycling headed to Beautiful New Jersey to tackle the first race weekend of the season at Rutgers. After a night of awesome food at Gil's house we departed nice and early Saturday morning to take on the short and intense 2.2 mile opening TT. The TT offered a good opportunity to get the prerace jitters out and get back in the mindset of racing. Kelly ended up setting a blistering pace taking 2nd in the TT

Later in the afternoon we had the traditional stadium criterium. Craig, one of the teams new members, was first to go in Men's D. Craig rode a great first ever race and is looking like he will have an amazing first season. Then came the highlight of the day in Men's C. Brian Tino and Scott Henry, took complete control of the race from start to finish with Gil riding support. In the finale Tino took the win and Scott took 3rd to round out Bucknell's podium of domination. In the womens A/B field our girls showed that the women's side of the team is strong as ever with Kelly taking 3rd and Sinead taking 10th. Jeff Salvitti rounded out the days racing in the men's A race getting into a late breakaway and securing 3rd for the team.

Sunday:
Sunday greeted us with warm weather with occasional pouring rain. The first highlight of the day in the points race came from the Women's A/B race with Kelly and Sinead riding together and finishing 2nd and 3rd. Little Chicky also put in a great ride placing 10th, rounding out the women's solid performance. In the Men's A race Jeff Salvitti was able to secure a few tough sprints against a fast field in order to place 2nd.

Overall:
ECCC: Bucknell 4th out of 37
Women's B overall: Kelly 2nd, and Sinead 5th
Mens C: Tino 12th and Scott 14th
Mens A: Salvitti 3rd

Race Season Preview

It's the first week of March, and to a collegiate cyclists in the East Coast Cycling Conference (ECCC), that only means one thing: IT'S GO TIME! Race season will begin this Saturday morning. Although many of us are wishing that we got in some more training time, as we convene at the vans this afternoon to head to New Jersey the excitement of a new and exciting year will overcome any lingering regrets.

The men's and women's teams seem to be facing very different outlooks on the competitive season this year.

Men's Team
While the men's team lost  three national A riders to last year's graduating class, they have a great group of sophomore and Junior guys that are guaranteed to show great improvement this year. Jeff Salvitti will be our lone rider in As (at least for the first part of the year), and we have quite the spread of riders in each of the other fields B,C,D. All looking to get some good racing under their belts, and hopefully a few upgrades.

Class of 2011: Jeff Salvitti, Jess Petrie, Kevin Curran, Michael Driscoll,Scott Henry
Class of 2012: Peter Davis, Billy Holm, Conrad Buck, Josh Kurtz, Bobby Thorborg, Brian Tino
Class of 2013: Harry Chen (Vice President), Gil Erlich (Treasurer), Tom Palley, Craig Tuller, Matt McAnear, Kyle Kissock (Secretary)
Class of 2014: Noah Talisa, Tommy Paradise

 Women's Team
The women's team however, is led by a strong group of returning upperclassmen all of whom will be riding Bs to start the season. We have a few new riders that will be riding Cs, but seemed to have a low year for the women in recruitment of underclassmen. The women's team hopes to send some girls to nationals this year, and it is our goal to gain recognition of the women's cycling at Bucknell through great results this year!

Class of 2011: Emily Daniels, Steph Tetlow, Rebekah Morris, Sinead O'Dwyer
Class of 2012: Kelly Desharnais (President), Caitlin Cavanaugh, Christine Kobza, Emily Novak
Class of 2013: Rebekah Hupp
Class of 2014: Brenna Powell, Katie Murphy

Chili Wednesdays

Tonight was another Chili Wednesday with my version of a white chili, competing with Scott's venison chili and caught and cooked and Dan Wood's slow roast pork chili. Next up is 2Step's secret chili recipe.

We easily devoured through 16 servings, and Harry Monster taking his exam didn't get any leftovers.

Sinead and Twilight helped out with dishes, and we managed to get a photo shoot with Tino.

Team 3 in the Lead

With only 12 more days until the start of the season, Team 3 is in a strong lead in the winter training challenge.
Keep up the good work team, those water bottles are almost ours!

Cycling Birthday Bash

The team recently got together for a birthday bash celebration in honor of the five February birthdays on the team--Caitlin, Steph, Billy Jean, Da Shark, and Grundle Bear. Friends and team members gathered at 2Step's house for the festivities, and played some classic birthday games, such as pin the clothes Grundle Bear.

Everyone had an attempt at pinning a shirt and pants as well as the occasional hat. Caitlin and Steph made valiant efforts, but ended up down the hall and in the doorway. Dan Wood inadvertently won with his hat, by bumping off of Fixed Gear's shoulder and landing directly onto the picture.

There was even a homemade funfettty birthday cake with imaginary candles, which mainly ended up on Grundle Bear's face, foreshadowed by 2Step's approaching hand.

Heinrich Haussler for the Win

In the spring semester last year, Harry Chen introduced a bunch of us to the Cervelo Test Team. We were addicted to watching their fantastically produced videos, and began to follow the team with great intensity. I was in love with the sport of cycling, but after watching Cervelo's documentary's I was beyond enamored.

While Scott grew fond of Thor for his large stature, I was wooed by the adorable monologue given by Heinrich in part two of their 2009 Tour de France documentary. Despite being rejected by him on facebook, we continued to follow his progress (or misfortune) throughout this summer. This summer, Heinrich suffered a knee injury as well as a series of crashes that put him out of the tour. Cervelo test team has merged with Garmin to create the Garmin-Cervelo team, but they can still be followed at cervelo.com.

Apparently, Heinrich has recovered well from his knee injury and misfortune with crashes.
Harry Chen brought to my attention that Heinrich won the second stage of the Tour de Quatar to take the overal lead from Tom Boonen. Check out the article and results here.

I just wanted to share some inspiration, from one cyclist to another. So read the articles and get watching the Cervelo documentaries for a glimpse into the life of professional cyclists. And for all my cyclist ladies, check out the Varganda World Cup videos of Cervelo's female team.

Enjoy!
